OUT OF CHARACTER

CONTENT WARNING The Knick is a medical drama set in 1900, and it definitely doesn’t pull any punches. Things that might come up when interacting with Thackery include medical gore, drug addiction and abuse, death, child death, blood transfusions, medical malpractice, suicide, self-surgery, and period-typical racism.

Thackery is a drug addict from a time period where addiction was not fully understood, and has quite a lackadaisical approach to using drugs including cocaine, opium and heroin. Treatment options for addiction were limited, and societal opinion of drug addicts was very low.

On the subject of racism, Thackery himself is not maliciously racist, but is embedded in a position of power in a largely racist society, and may have some outdated beliefs which I am happy for other characters to call him out on (but please don’t feel obligated to engage with this, and I will never spring these conversations on players without OOC discussion). Also, in the show he uses a word to refer to Black people that was considered polite at the time but is now extremely outdated; I will not be using this word in tags. Another character in the show, one of Thackery’s colleagues, is overtly racist and eventually aligns himself with the eugenics movement, which Thackery finds abhorrent; mentions of eugenics in this context may crop up, but again not without OOC discussion.
